Unsung heroes of Science
February 10 @ 8:00 am - April 26 @ 5:00 pmFree
Who has history forgotten? Whose story has been left out of the textbooks? Whose work gets overlooked? Whose story do you want to share?
At Oxford University’s Hertford College we’re excited to launch our brand-new video competition: Unsung Heroes of Science. Anyone in the UK aged 16-18 can enter – we want you to make a short video celebrating a scientist who deserves wider recognition. There are no restrictions on who you can choose to celebrate – they can be alive or dead and from anywhere in the world. We want to see who inspires you in the world of science and learn more about them.
Working in a team of two or three, we challenge you to create two videos, each of which is around two minutes long. In the first (and most important) one we want to hear about the unsung hero of science that you’ve chosen to celebrate. Tell us a story about what you find interesting, whether that’s their life, their discoveries or even their mistakes. Your target audience for this video is 12-year-olds so you should tell the story of your hero in an engaging, accessible and clear way. In the second video we want to meet your team, so tell us about who you are and why you chose your unsung hero.
The competition is open to anyone in the UK aged 16-18. You must enter in teams of two or three. As we’ll be looking for engaging content and brilliant ideas – rather than professional video editing skills – you don’t need any fancy equipment to take part. If you want to film and edit the videos on your phone that’s absolutely fine. Download the terms and conditions below for more details about how to submit your entries.
The competition will be judged by Professor Alison Woollard – she’s a Biochemistry tutor at Hertford College and the University of Oxford’s Champion for Public Engagement. Every shortlisted team will be invited to an all-expenses-paid celebration event in Oxford where we’ll announce the overall winners. The winning team will get to meet award-winning journalist and news anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy on an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour at Channel 4 News.
There will also be a prize for the team chosen by online viewers in a public vote. Both winners will be announced at the celebration day in July 2019 and all shortlisted videos will be published on our website and social media channels.
All competition entries must be submitted by Friday 26th April 2019.
